In the face of a warming world, there is one monumental force that has the power to bring about the change we seek: community. This is the directive of the HumanNature Initiative— a multifaceted project that aims to bring the community of change-makers together to educate, inspire, and spearhead the shift towards a more sustainable world.
Through a series of profiles on individuals making a difference in their communities and fields, I delve into the remarkable worlds of my subjects: their life experiences, their careers, and their personal connections to the issue of climate change. It is my mission not only to honor their work and impact, but in telling these human stories, I hope to inspire the agency within my readers to strive to create positive change within their own communities.
We are living in a time when climate change is affecting our everyday lives, and threatening the stability of our not-so-distant futures. These effects do not simply manifest in the physical world around us, but within us.
Mentally, the issue is extremely taxing. Terms such as ‘eco-anxiety’ and ‘climate distress’ have been coined by psychologists as a means to characterize the stressful emotions related to this issue. It is within our nature to fear that which we cannot predict, and that which we feel we cannot change. It is within our nature to feel connected to the natural world around us— no matter how far we may have strayed from it.
While it is a topic shrouded in uncertainty, I know one thing for certain: that by pooling our collective wisdom, we can develop creative solutions to fight the battle against climate change and adapt to the new realities of our warming world. The coming together of diverse voices, perspectives, and skills will be the key to effectively tackling the climate crisis— one of the most pressing issues of our time.
The HumanNature Initiative, then, is a platform to showcase that coming together. It is a mode to send this very message into the world at large: you are not alone in these worries, and you are not alone in this fight. There are individuals in all realms of study and trade, that are devoting their lives to ensuring a brighter future for our world. By sharing their stories and solutions, we can lessen the emotional burden of countless humans beings along the way.
Let us come together to build a movement of change. Let us remember that no action is too small, no voice too insignificant. It is through our collective effort that we can reshape the trajectory of our planet. Let us join hands, ignite the spark of collective action, and together build a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
